dHā

dHā is a dynamic collaboration between two classical Indian musicians from Bombay and three Jazz musicians from London and New Zealand, exploring the natural synergy of improvisation of both Indian classical music and Western Jazz through original compositions.

dHā is a fundamental syllable of the tabla cycle. It is often the beginning, the principal beat and as such reflects the natural synergy in rhythm between the two musical forms. Since 2002, dHā have been creating sophisticated and in many respects spiritual Indo-Jazz, continuing a musical tradition started in the 60s by the pioneers of Indo-Jazz such as John Meyer and John McLaughlin and reflective of the world in which we live.

Comprising Tenor and Soprano Saxophones, Sitar, Tabla and Double Bass, dHā originally began by experimenting with Indian instruments on jazz standards but they discovered ‘you can't just add sax to Indian music - it's just doesn’t gel. The answer was to turn the concept on its head and start playing Indian classical ragas with instruments and rhythms borrowed from their collective improvisational musical heritage. Compositions are written through hearing and feeling the rasa (mood) of each piece, with some compositions scored, others learnt by ear, a process cultivated over time.

"Sometimes it just becomes so beautiful that it just freezes as a perfect moment in your mind”
